DIY Medal Frame

1

I originally had my medals put away in a drawer and thought about how to display them. I didn’t want to spend lots of $$ on a frame that I knew I could make myself. So I put my creative mind to work.

First, I went and purchased a shadowbox frame from Target. The one I got was 12X12. Then, I went to the craft store and got some black foam board. I measured and cut, then I sliced openings where I wanted the medals to hang.

After a little bit of fiddling trying to get the lanyards through the slits, I had a nice way to display my medals.

Total Cost: $23. Not too bad, and I still have room for another medal.

This morning I made some oat bran which included a banana, fiber one cereal, PB2, and some cinnamon.

I didn’t add as much water as I usually do so it was extra thick and creamy! Now, back to work :)

Blending for a Blender

1

Two posts in one day? I must be crazy! Well, sometimes I can be, but today I came across a little giveaway at Chocolate Covered Katie. She’s giving away a Vita-Mix and how I would love to have one of those! My food processor broke, so I’m down to my Magic Bullet.

To earn some extra entries I wanted to make one of her recipes and decided on the Chocolate Fudge Babies. I already had the ingredients and thought it would be fun to try them. Since I knew I would be the only person in the house to eat them I decided to divide the measurements by three so I had fewer servings.

All I had to do was get some walnuts, dates (I used Medjool), vanilla extract, and dark cocoa powder. Can’t get much simplier than that! First, I pitted the dates, chopped them up and then measured everything.

Then I put all the ingredients into the Magic Bullet for about 10-15 seconds.

Here’s what it looked like:

Then I rolled them into little balls and fancied them up by putting them in mini muffin cups.

The verdict? Yum! I love the chocolate, plus they are so easy to make and perfect for a little treat. Thanks for the great recipe Katie!

3,2,1 Contacts

2

Long time no blog! No excuses for me, but the new year is going pretty great so far! I know it’s only been a few weeks, but a little update on my goals for this year.

PR in a Half Marathon – I went ahead and signed up for the Zooma Annapolis on June 6. I’ve heard the course is hilly, but I plan on going all out with the training that will include speedwork and a longer training schedule. However, I will only be doing 3 runs per week. I’ve put together a nice plan with the help of Runner’s World Smart Coach and will be putting it up in the Races & Training section soon.

Getting Back to my “Happy Weight” – I’m happy to announce that since December I have lost 10lbs and 10 inches, so things are going smoothly. I’m making better food choices every day and have been getting back into my normal exercise routine.

Completely revamp FitBlogr – Just need to work on some minor tweaks for the new layout. :)

365 Project – I haven’t taken a picture of myself every day. So it’ll be more like a once a week thing. I will be taking pictures of myself during my weight loss and maybe put it up on the blog one day if I’m brave enough. At the end of the year, I’ll put together a huge mosaic of the pictures that I took.

From Glasses to Contacts and Back to Glasses

When I was kid, I noticed how my dad and brother wore glasses. I was in the fourth grade and thought glasses were the coolest thing and I secretly hoped that I would need to wear them one day.

That day came two years later. My eye sight had gotten worse and I needed to wear glasses. Of course, they didn’t have nice, sleek glasses that they do now. Oh no, they had the giant frames that took up half your face. But I wore them proudly until I got contacts in high school.

I always had a back up pair of glasses just in case, but never wore them continuously until my Senior year of college. Besides astigmatism, I found myself putting in rewetting drops every hour because my eyes became just too dry. Since my middle school days, I was glad to see that frames have grown into more of a fashion statement, and I think I can pull them off pretty well.

Unfortunately, there is one place where I can’t wear them.

In the pool. I have been swimming to keep my legs going strong before my half marathon training starts next month. So I pulled out a pair of contacts I had stashed away (they don’t expire until 2013!) and wore them last night for my trip to the gym. I do not miss them at all. But they were necessary to wear so I could see better in the pool.

Yes, I have thought about the lasik eye surgery, but my eyes are too precious to me to have any blades or lasers come near them. As long as frames stay fashionable, I can see myself wearing them for years to come.

Although my weight loss has been going well, one of my big flaws is strength training. I’m not lost when it comes to doing it, but I usually just skip it after I’m done with my cardio workout at the gym because I just want to get home. Solution – do strength training before cardio! Which is what I did tonight:

Seated Leg Press

Hip Abduction

Chin Assist

Dip Assist

Hip Adduction

Lat Pull Down

Glute Machine

Row Machine

Torso Rotator

3×15 @ 165lbs

3×15 @ 130lbs

3×10 @ 165lbs

3×10 @ 165lbs

3×15 @ 145lbs

3×10 @ 60lbs

2×10 each leg @ 40lbs

2×10 @ 30lbs

2×10 each side @ 60lbs

Afterward I changed and got into the pool. I completed 30 laps (750 meters) in about 30 minutes. My form is improving (I’m not that great of a swimmer!) and I’ll be trying to start doing back to back laps without taking breaks in between.

Spring has been teasing us, we’ve had a few days where it’s been in the mid 50s! That’s warm for January, but I am loving it!

And no, you didn’t miss my post about the Disney half marathon. I’m still *patiently* waiting for some pictures. :)

Why Hello 2010

2

So, we rang in the New Year by watching Indiana Jones, switching channels to watch the ball drop, and then finishing the movie. Not very exciting but it was the best we could come up with on short notice. We were going to head to a restaurant for a late dinner, but every place we went to either the kitchen was closed or they wanted a cover charge. No thank you!

I wanted to go into a little bit more of detail of my goals for the year just so I can come back to this post and refresh my memory. :)

1. Run a Marathon – Spring is too early for me, so I hope to train during the summer and run one in the fall. I already have three possibilities. But I will be waiting a few months to make my final decision. I would also love to train with no injuries.

2. PR in a Half Marathon – I ran my first half marathon in May 2009 with a time of 2:43:11. That is what I hope to beat in 2010. I want to enjoy Disney and I didn’t do any speed training so I know I probably won’t get a PR. I’m 95% sure about which half marathon I’m doing and it’s the first week of June.

3. PR in a 5K – This is a big one for me. My fastest 5K was also my first, coming in at 28:30. It was my fastest because I was also about 40lbs lighter, which brings me to my next goal.

4. Get Back to My “Happy Weight” – In 2008 I lost about 30lbs in about 5 months, maintained for about 6 months, and then slowly gained it all back, plus more. Ack! I know what I need to do to reach my goals this year, and the weight is really holding me back. I already started to track what I’ve been eating for the past few weeks and have so far lost about 6lbs, so I’m chugging right along. :)

5. Completely revamp FitBlogr.com – I’m already tired of my layout, and I have a few new ideas for both the posts, and the blog itself. So this will be a work in progress.

6. Secret Goal #1 – Can’t really say yet, but I’m hoping to make it happen this year. If it does happen I’ll scream it out on here. :)

7. Secret Goal #2 – This will probably be the hardest of my goals this year. I hope to accomplish it by the end of the year, so you’ll have to wait until then.

8. Participate – Try to participate more in the blogging world.

9. 365 Project – Take one picture of myself, every day, for an entire year.

Day 1/365

This time next week I’ll be nice and warm in Florida!
